Taxes that got replaced by GST !!

The Goods and Services Tax came into effect on 1 July 2017 in India. It was launched by the then Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the intervening night of 30 June and 1 July 2017. In this blog of GST Suvidha Kendra, we will know which taxes have been abolished and implemented in India. GST has been introduced to prevent tax evasion and to save the traders from the double whammy of taxes. Working on the concept of One Nation, One Tax (One Nation One Tax), only one tax GST has been introduced by eliminating about 500 taxes present in different parts of the country.

Before knowing which taxes have been replaced by the GST, let us first know the Indian taxation system which is classified into two parts namely Direct Taxes & Indirect Taxes. Direct tax is collected by the Central Government. Whereas Indirect Tax is used to be collected by the Central and State government & local bodies.

Goods and Services Tax, also known as GST is an indirect form of tax that has been levied by the Central and State Governments on the sale/purchase or trade of goods and services across the nation.

The Act was established in the Parliament on 29th March 2017 and came into force on 1st July 2017. It came into existence just to bring uniformity in the Indian taxation system. After the implementation of GST, many taxes like excise tax, sales tax, entry tax, VAT, etc. were withdrawn and GST was implemented which gave a lot of support and relief to taxpayers. With basic GST slabs of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, it simplifies taxation.
